Definition
Water activated tape is a paper based carton sealing tape coated with a dry adhesive that becomes tacky when moistened. After activation, the adhesive penetrates the fibers of a corrugated carton and creates a strong bond with the box surface. This is different from plastic pressure sensitive tape, which relies on surface tack and pressure only. For ecommerce and export packaging teams, the practical benefit is a neat paper seal that looks integrated with the carton and is difficult to remove without visible damage.
How it is used
Most warehouses apply the tape with a manual or electric dispenser. The operator selects the strip length, the machine wets the adhesive, and the tape is pressed onto the carton seam. Standard non-reinforced tape works well for many ecommerce cartons. Reinforced tape adds fiberglass yarns for heavier shipments or cartons that pass through multiple logistics hubs.
Buying note
When sourcing WAT, confirm tape width, roll length, paper weight, reinforcement, print colors, carton weight, and the type of dispenser used in your packing area. These details help suppliers recommend the right construction instead of quoting a generic tape that may be too light or unnecessarily expensive.
